M84 is the official camouflage of the Danish Armed Forces, designed for effective concealment in dense European forests. It is based on the German Flecktarn pattern but adapted for Scandinavian environments, particularly Danish forests, marshlands, and mixed terrains.
First introduced in 1984, M84 remains the primary field camouflage of the Danish military.
Development History of M84
Before the 1980s, the Danish Army used solid-colored uniforms, but advancements in camouflage technology led to the development of a more effective pattern.
In 1984, Danish military designers took inspiration from Flecktarn but simplified its structure and adjusted the color scheme. While the speckled pattern remained, the number of shades was reduced, making it more suitable for Scandinavian landscapes.
Since then, M84 has been the standard camouflage of the Danish Army, used in various military conflicts and peacekeeping missions.

Design and Features of M84
M84 uses three main colors optimized for European woodland environments:
• Dark green – the dominant color, blending into dense vegetation.
• Black – provides contrast, mimicking natural shadows.
• Light green – helps merge with bright grass and foliage.
Differences from Flecktarn:
• Fewer colors (only three instead of five).
• Simpler pattern structure, making it easier to manufacture and print.
• Enhanced effectiveness in Scandinavian forests and wetlands.
M84 performs exceptionally well in dense vegetation, low-light conditions, and cold regions, making it ideal for Northern Europe.

Usage and Operational Deployment
The Danish Army has deployed M84 in various military operations, including:
• Balkans (1990s) – used in NATO peacekeeping missions.
• Afghanistan (2000s) – initially deployed in mountainous regions before being replaced by desert-adapted versions.
• NATO training exercises – proved highly effective in European woodland environments.
Several variants of M84 have been developed to meet different operational needs:
• M/01 Desert – a version adapted for desert missions (primarily used in Afghanistan).
• M/11 MultiCam – a modernized adaptation for international operations.
Despite the introduction of newer camouflage patterns, M84 remains the primary camouflage of the Danish Army due to its continued effectiveness in its native terrain.

Popularity in Civilian Use
M84 has gained popularity beyond the military, including:
• Airsoft and paintball – valued for its excellent woodland concealment.
• Tactical apparel – widely used by outdoor and survival gear manufacturers.
• Military gear collectors – M84 has become iconic among Scandinavian military uniform enthusiasts.
Thanks to its reliability and functionality, this camouflage pattern continues to be highly sought after by both military personnel and tactical gear enthusiasts.
