M05 is the current standard camouflage pattern used by the Finnish Defence Forces (Puolustusvoimat). Introduced in the early 2000s, it replaced the older M91 pattern, offering improved concealment, modern materials, and better adaptation to Finland’s varied landscapes and climate conditions.

This camouflage system was developed specifically for Finnish terrain, providing effective concealment in dense forests, wetlands, and rocky environments. Unlike earlier patterns, M05 uses a digital approach, making it more effective against modern surveillance and detection technologies.

Development and Purpose

The development of M05 began in the late 1990s, when the Finnish Defence Forces realized that the older M91 camouflage needed improvements. New surveillance technologies, including thermal imaging and digital reconnaissance, made traditional camouflage less effective.

Key objectives for M05 included:
Enhanced concealment – The pattern was designed to work in Finland’s forests, swamps, and mixed terrain, ensuring soldiers remained undetected at various distances.
Modernized color palette – The colors were adjusted to match the seasonal changes in Finnish nature.
Advanced fabric technology – The uniform was designed with newer, more durable materials, offering better resistance to wear and weather conditions.

M05 was officially introduced in 2005 and gradually became the standard issue camouflage for all branches of the Finnish military.

Design and Features

M05 is a pixelated camouflage pattern, unlike the blotchy M91 design. It follows the modern trend of digitized camouflage, which breaks up the human silhouette more effectively at different distances.
Color scheme:
Dark green – The dominant shade, optimized for Finnish coniferous forests.
Medium green – Provides depth and blending in mixed terrain.
Black – Enhances contrast in shadowed areas and breaks up outlines.

The pixelated pattern makes M05 highly effective against the human eye and digital detection systems, reducing visibility across varied environments.
Fabric and durability: M05 uniforms are made from high-quality ripstop fabric, offering resistance to tearing, moisture, and harsh weather conditions.
Improved cut and comfort: Compared to M91, the M05 uniform features better ergonomic design, including adjustable sleeves, reinforced stitching, and optimized pocket placement for field operations.

Variants of M05

To enhance its versatility, several M05 variations were developed for different environments:
M05 Maastokuvio (“Woodland”) – The standard pattern used in forests and mixed landscapes.
M05 Lumikuvio (“Snow”) – A winter camouflage featuring a white base with light grey elements, designed for snowy environments.
M05 Aavikko (“Desert”) – A special version developed for Finnish peacekeeping forces operating in desert and arid conditions.
M05 Urban – An experimental pattern designed for urban warfare and law enforcement, though not widely used.

Each of these variants was tailored for specific operational needs, ensuring Finnish forces remain adaptable in various combat scenarios.

Use in the Finnish Defence Forces

Since its official introduction in 2005, M05 has been the standard camouflage for all branches of the Finnish military:
Army (Maavoimat) – Used by infantry, mechanized units, and special forces.
Navy (Merivoimat) – Certain units utilize M05 for coastal operations.
Air Force (Ilmavoimat) – Used in ground operations and base security.

M05 has also been used by Finnish peacekeeping forces in international missions, proving its adaptability beyond Finnish terrain.

Influence and Civilian Applications

M05 is exclusive to the Finnish Defence Forces, meaning it is not legally available to the public. However, civilian versions with slightly altered color patterns have been produced for:
Hunting and outdoor clothing – Finnish brands manufacture M05-inspired gear for hunters and survivalists.

Airsoft and tactical gear – Replica uniforms are popular among military enthusiasts.
Law enforcement and security – Some Finnish police and security units have tested variations of M05 for urban operations.

M05 remains one of the most effective European camouflage patterns, combining modern digital technology with a design optimized for Finland’s unique terrain. It continues to evolve, ensuring Finnish forces maintain a tactical advantage in concealment and operational effectiveness.
