The Dance of Death (Danse Macabre) is a widespread motif in Western European culture, originally appearing in mottos and literature, and later becoming a recurring theme in frescoes, paintings, and print series from the 14th to the 20th century.
The idea of life’s transience and the inevitable end of human suffering gained prominence among the Catholic majority around the year 1000, as many believed the world would end at the turn of the millennium. Although the prophecy did not come true, the constant turmoil, famine, wars, plagues, and hardships only deepened the belief in the futility of earthly pleasures — a theme that found powerful expression in the visual arts.
